Build
this kit and you will have a beautiful, full size, versatile floor
harp. It has 31 nylon strings, giving it a 4 plus octave range. The
range begins at E two octaves below middle C, in standard or deluxe
strings (In deluxe the 5 lowest strings are wound). Comes with standard
strings and may be upgraded to Deluxe.
The 31 String Gothic
is a very versatile harp; tall enough for adults but not too big for
children. It is used by many professional players for concerts,
recordings, church services, and Music Therapy in hospitals and is the
harp of choice with the Chalice of Repose program.
This
harp has a lot of volume and a big bass voice. The volume will be
increased even more by using the Deluxe string set. The 5 bottom
strings are wound which increase the stiffness and provides greater
volume. The
31 String Harp Kit comes with tapered tuning pins, threaded guide pins,
and has decorative inlay banding that adds a beautiful touch to the
outer edge of the harp.
The
pillar and neck are made of solid cherry. The sides, back and base are
solid cherry as well and has an aircraft birch soundboard for super
resonation.

CONSTRUCTION
DIFFICULTY RATING FOR THIS KIT: 4
(ON A SCALE OF 1 TO 5 WITH 1
BEING EASY AND 5 BEING A CHALLENGING CHARACTER BUILDING EXPERIENCE)
All of the harp kits we offer
are made from solid woods that are nicely pre-cut and pre-fitted and
are a pleasure to assemble. This is a large harp and will take about 40
hours to put together. You will want a large table to work on, 6 to 8
clamps, electric drill, a power sander, and a jig-saw, as well as the
usual hand tools. There are a couple of assembly steps that you may
want a friend to assist with - such as installing the rounded back. The
holes in the neck are pre-drilled for the tapered tuning pins. You will
need an electric hand drill for drilling the string holes in the
soundboard and for installing the screws. The instructions are very
straightforward and include how to string and tune your harp.

String Gothic Harp kit assembly summary
Begin by gluing
and screwing the four frame pieces together to form the basic
soundchamber frame. Three braces are then fitted and glued across the
frame from side to side.
The soundboard
requires two extra pieces to be glued and clamped to the inner face and
one to the outer face, down the center. You will need some scrap 2x4
lumber to assist in spanning the length in order to clamp these parts
securely. Drill 31 holes down the center of the front for the strings,
as punch-marked on the wood (drill bit provided). Glue front and back
panels into position by tacking along the sides and bottom with tiny
nails provided (this operation requires two people working together).
Glue decorative
trim strips over the nails and then sand the corners to round them over
and feather the trim strips into the frame. The sides, front and back
are cut slightly oversized in length, so you will trim off any excess
after the parts are fastened in place. This is most easily done with a
belt sander. Install the feet at bottom of the frame using an electric
drill as a screwdriver.
Fit neck and
pillar together standing in place on the harp frame. Glue and clamp
oval overlays on each side of the joint, using c-clamps to hold firmly
until dry.
Sand and finish
entire instrument. We offer a wipe on polyurethane finishing kit
separately, but you may use another finish of your choice. Install
hardware, tapping the pins in place with a hammer. Attach the nylon
strings by tying a knot in one end and wrapping the other end around
the tuning pins (tuning wrench included). Tune to pitch with the help
of a good ear, or an electronic
tuner (recommended).
Estimate total assembly time: 40-50 hours.
