DESIGNED, HANDCRAFTED, AND PRODUCED IN THE U.S.A.

There are a lot of simple instrument designs portrayed in books, but most of them lack reliability when it comes to actual playing. The designers of these kits have worked hard to produce these simple instruments that really work. They are easy to assemble, stay in tune well, have accurate pitch up the scale and easy-to-play string height. All this plus they sound remarkably good!

Each kit has been designed with four strings for simplicity. They can all be tuned to the top four strings of a guitar (except the Mountain Dulcimer) and played together using the same chords. A songbook is included with each kit - great for playing individually or as a class.

ASSEMBLY TIME

Assembly time is about 3 - 4 hours and is best done in 3 or 4 seperate sessions to maintain attention, energy, and enthusiasm.  By the last session you are ready to tune the instrument and teach a few beginner songs from the songbook.

ASSEMBLY SUMMARY

1. Assemble pre-cut cardboard body parts together with Elmer’s glue and masking tape.

2. Glue Wedge piece to peghead and drill for tuning pins and strings (or order pre-drilled and glued peghead).

3. Mark fret positions from paper template, and then glue frets into place.

4. Glue fingerboard to body, string up and tune. Decorate as desired.

5. PLAY!  Learn to play songs from the songbook that is included. Have fun with friends!

This DVD should clear up any questions you might have about these cardboard kits.

Jerry discusses what is involved in building the kits, how long they will last, how they are tuned, and many other aspects of these instruments. The DVD is free with any order, is 37 minutes long, and includes a video tour of the factory in Minnesota where these are made.

Note to teachers:
The instructions for these cardboard instrument kits have been written specifically to help teachers use them as classroom projects. You’ll find ample hints and suggestions for working with groups, such as pairing kids together in buddy fashion to help each other, holding parts in safe-keeping until needed, setting up special “stations” for drilling, sanding, stringing, and tuning, and ideas for teaching kids to play their finished instruments. They are most suited to ages 9 and up but younger children enjoy them as well with assistance from an adult or older child.

We believe you’ll find these kits to be highly educational for the following reasons:

INTEGRATED SUBJECTS: Teach woodworking, art, math, music, history, culture -- all in one project!

APPEAL TO ALL LEARNING STYLES: kinesthetic (hands-on building), auditory (music), and visual (decorating)

EXCELLENT FOR GROUP MUSIC INSTRUCTION: Guitars, banjos, ukuleles, and mandolins can all be tuned together to allow everyone to learn the same chords -- great for group song fests. Mountain dulcimers work well for exploring modal scales.

SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT: Instruments go together quickly and easily, so kids maintain their enthusiasm.

MUSICALITY: These instruments really work. Whatever the kids learn on a 4-string guitar will transfer to a 6-string instrument. It is a great way to start with an easy instrument.

FLEXIBILITY: You can order individual parts and design your own instruments with your own cardboard boxes to save money. The String Boards can be glued to any cardboard box or other type of resonator. It is fun for kids to test the sound of various size resonators.
